Proper Disposal of The American Flag
Filed Under AFB on TV, AFB's Community Service | Leave a Comment
What do you do with the American flag once it is finished serving its duty? That’s what Tracy Douglass from KARK Channel 4, and participators from the Boy Scouts, the American Legion, and Kerry McCoy of FlagandBanner.com set out to inform viewers early Monday morning, June 2, 2007. Participators gathered together at Arkansas’ Macarthur Military Museum to partake in a flag burning ceremony of the American flag.

It is customary when a flag has faded, molded, discolored, or the fly-end is tattered, to present the folded flag for inspection to the Commander before disposal. The Ceremony begins with the presentation of the colors, then the presenting of the folded flag, and then the flag is placed in a fire and burned… It is tradition to return the flag to the earth. Bring your worn and tattered flag to FlagandBanner.com for $5.00 off your next American Flag purchase July 2nd thru July 3rd. FlagandBanner.com will dispose the flag for you. And if you’re not nearby Flagandbanner.com bring your flag to your local Boy Scouts of America troop, or The American Legion Auxiliary.
Have a safe and Happy 4th of July!

Do the Red White and Blue
Filed Under AFB on TV | Leave a Comment
June is the month we begin to celebrate patriotism. On June 4 Arkansas’ FlagandBanner.com owner, Kerry McCoy, started her morning early with KARK Channel 4’s co-host Tracy Douglass to show the viewers how to “Do The Red White and Blue.” Kerry and her team decorated the exterior of Tracy Douglass’ house for the upcoming patriotic season. The first two segments centered on the decorations in the front yard. They draped the outside of her garage with a patriotic swag of red white and blue bunting that framed an American flag. Lit patriotic citronella candles and U.S. stick flags decorated her garden. Her porch eave featured full fans with wind chimes, and her porch railing repeated the patriotic sway of bunting used above the garage.

The last segment illustrated ways to decorate the backyard, the favorite place for 4th of July family gatherings. The back porch was outfitted with stars and stripes pulldowns and full fans, and more full fans and a U.S. flag kit adorned her fence. Kerry and Tracy also showed viewers the wide variety of products offered at the company, Flagandbanner.com from cake stands to patriotic bikinis and sunglasses, to flagpole brackets and pole kits. The morning segment ended with the National Anthem sung by a special guest, Kerry’s son, Grady McCoy, a voice student at Indiana University. Don’t forget to watch this upcoming U.S. Flag Day, June 14th, for live at FlagandBanner.com

P. Allen Smith Gardens feature patriotic wreath from FlagandBanner.com
Filed Under AFB on TV | Leave a Comment

In a patriotic-themed program to air on April 17, 2006, P. Allen Smith Gardens asked FlagandBanner.com’s founder and owner, Kerry McCoy, to create a fresh-flower arrangement to celebrate the USA. Kerry chose red American Beauty roses and baby’s breath to build a gorgeous live wreath and topped it off with a stars and stripes bow. Kerry shows how easy it is to create an elegant and impressive way to accent your patriotic celebration. Use yellow roses to create a stunning welcome home tribute for a brave soldier. In the upper right photo, Mandy Stanage Shoptaw, producer for the P. Allen Garden show, directs Kerry in the proper method to address the camera. The segment was shot on location at the FlagandBanner.com headquarters.

In the photo at left, Kerry cuts a rose to begin the wreath (a finished wreath can be seen behind her, to her right). This entire project can be completed in less than one hour. Stay tuned for Kerry’s next appearance on P. Allen Smith Gardens airing close to Flag Day to learn helpful flag-flying tips and more about the patriotic American gifts at FlagandBanner.com.

September 11th has been designated as Patriot Day by United States Public Law #107-89, which amended Title 36 of the United States Code effective December 18, 2001. The law states that on Patriot Day is when to fly the flag at half-staff in honor of the individuals who lost their lives as a result of the terrorist attacks. State and local governments and the people of the United States have been called upon to observe Patriot Day with appropriate programs and activities. Further, the law requests that individuals observe a moment of silence in memory of the victims. For a flag in a bracket mounted on a house or other building, it is not possible to “half-staff” the flag. Therefore, a tradition of using black ribbons as a sign of mourning can be used. Two black ribbons of suitable length (perhaps, the width and length of one stripe) should be attached at the top of the pole. For a flag hung vertically, a ribbon should be affixed at each end of the “top” heading of the flag. These ribbons should never be attached to the face of the flag itself. One theory on the origin of “half-staff” is that it comes from the military custom of lowering the flag to show, at the time of death, submission to the will of God. Current custom indicates that the flag is “in mourning” when it is at half-staff. It is interesting to note that other countries observe the same tradition at a time of national mourning.
When a flag is flown at half-staff, it should first be raised to the top of the pole and then lowered to half-staff. It is important to note that when the United States flag is flown at “half-staff”, no other flag can be flown at “full-staff”. It is disrespectful to fly any flag higher than the U.S. Flag. On a solemn occasion such as Patriot Day, proper respect should be shown to those who lost their lives as well as the surviving families by flying the U.S. Flag with dignity and respect. The U.S. Flag Code states that the flag should not be flown when it is no longer a fitting emblem for display. When the flag is faded, frayed or ripped, it is not considered to be a dignified symbol of the United States; it is disrespectful to fly the U.S. Flag in such a condition. Citizens should either remove “unserviceable” flags from display or proudly fly a bright, fresh flag during such solemn observances.

Mike Francis is “Working for a Living” at Arkansas FlagandBanner.com
Filed Under AFB on TV | Leave a Comment

In a patriotic-themed program just before Independence Day, Mike Francis, weekend weatherman for KARK Channel 4, came to the offices of FlagandBanner.com to try his hand at the flag business. Mike introduced the business, the owner Kerry McCoy, and his duties for the morning standing in front of the 9′ Lady Liberty statue in the building’s foyer. Unpaid and untrained, Mike did a surprisingly good job at sewing a torn flag, working the grommet machine (and mocking it’s noise… btttt-BAP!), folding a flag, tying the presentation cord to an indoor flag pole, still unharmed through it all, making an ink swipe on the screen printing table. Mike’s final duty was to place an American flag on the fire for an official Retiring Ceremony conducted by the Boy Scouts Troop #6 and Troop #262. Keeping watch over the ceremony - and Mike - was the Little Rock Fire Department. We appreciate all who participated in the occasion and would like to thank Mike Francis for his interest in our endeavors here at FlagandBanner.com. Great job, Mike, but don’t quit your day job… you are a better weatherman!
